THE DEMOCRATIC ESTABLISHMENT IS NOT GOING TO‍ ‍DELIVER CHANGE .

WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO DO IT OURSELVES.

In election after election across the country, working-class progressive voters are making it known just how deeply disillusioned they are with the Democratic Party.

Is it any wonder? The party has become dominated by moneyed interests and led by exhausted, risk-averse insiders. For years, it has prioritized relationships with mega-donors and feeding consultant-driven campaign machinery over building durable grassroots organizing power. Its campaigns depend heavily on underpaid staff positions that are often only accessible to the already well-to-do, sidelining the very working-class communities the party claims to champion – and worries it's losing.

The result is a stagnant and hollowed-out institution, ill-equipped to meet the urgency of this moment or to mount the kind of energetic, uncompromising opposition needed to confront Trump and the authoritarian movement surrounding him.

More and more people are coming to the same conclusion: the Democratic establishment is not going to deliver change. We are going to have to do it ourselves.

OUR STORY

That was the premise behind the organizing fellowship launched in 2025 by NYC Council Member Tiffany Cabán . The idea was straightforward: if the national Democratic Party is unwilling to recruit, train, and invest in working-class political talent, then she would do it herself.

Together with seasoned organizers from New York and national campaigns, Cabán helped build a six-week training program that paid 12 New Yorkers from every borough and a wide range of backgrounds to learn the fundamentals of organizing. The results were extraordinarily promising.

THE IMPACT

  • One fellow got their first full-time job at a housing advocacy organization

  • Another fellow now works in the office of a City Council Member in Brooklyn

  • After being incarcerated, one fellow started an organization to support folks returning home

  • A trans teacher who joined our fellowship went on to co-lead a campaign resulting in a $14 million investment from the city for trans healthcare initiatives

  • One of our fellows, a co-chair of Columbia DSA, went on to lead divestment organizing among students at the university, then taught organizing skills to fellow students.

WHO WE ARE

Now, Council Member Cabán is scaling up the program by starting a new organization, We Got Us. We Got Us is rooted in the ideals of community power, freedom, justice, progressive policy priorities, and putting people first.

OUR GOALS ARE SIMPLE

  1. Grow working-class political power by identifying, training, and supporting new organizers.

  2. Support our fellows as they organize in their communities, build power, and create change

  3. Build a model of leadership development and local organizing that is sustainable and replicable across the country.
